Well the good news is Spin City is finally on DVD:
The bad news is unlike other sitcom and comedy/drama that release complete seasons, DreamWorks has decided something differently. The studio decided to only put a handful of episodes on DVD and split them into two volumes (this being Vol. 1). The idea is that these are Michael J. Fox's favorite episodes. This is very disappointing for fans of the show who'd like to own the complete series, but at least Fox made some really good choices. However I want EVERY single episode from the Season. I know this is some typical marketing strategy: if this work, they can produce more DVD in similar strategy and at last they will also release the complete season box set. As the fan you will get them all. And on the other hands, this kind of box set which features highlights episodes and prominent guest star appearances provide a safety net in sales for DreamWorks.
Yes, I think Spin City was the best funny sitcom ever. It's one of the very few clever humor series I've seen in half a century of TV watching. I love Seinfeld, Goodness Gracious Me was hilarious and very smart too, but Spin City never failed to make me laugh my head out and still feel intelligent!
At its heart, Spin City was an ensemble show and the cast worked beautifully together. The writers made good use of the physical differences between Fox and Bostwick. The dialouge is witty, the story-lines creative. Fox's performances were consistently energetic. He was constantly running after someone, diving over a desk, or jumping into the river. Also great was the developing relationship between Carter and Stuart. Carter was gay and fought for civil rights issues, while Stuart was homophobic and obsessed with nothing more than sex. They eventually became roommates and formed a hilarious Odd Couple pairing that made for some of the best moments in the series.

On this dvd:
Michael J. Fox's introduce every episode on this dvd. He shortly tell why he has included the episode and often some fun inside information.
The dvd starts with the first episode of spin city “Pilot”, where we get to meet the staff and see how they balance the political area and their personal relationships.

The next episode is "Meet Tommy Dugan" which features a guest appearance from Woody Harrelson as a school custodian who wins a Mayor of the Day contest. It’s an awesome episode and one of the best episodes of the dvd collection.

In "Dog Day Afternoon" you really see why Spin City is such a great show. Problems arise when Carter and Paul lose the dog in a Taxi. Amusing farcical situations escalate from here as Mike and the staff attempt to save face. The ending of this episode is halliards.

In "Family Affair, Parts 1 & 2" Mike's mom visits, but she gets a little too close to the Mayor for Mike's comfort. Meredith Baxter is reunited with Michael J. Fox as Mike’s mom, which she also did on Family Ties. This is a fun episode not just for the nostalgia factor, but there is also an amusing subplot where Paul gets shot in the head and then gets sued for it. This leads to an appearance on The People's Court. These two episodes shows how important the co-stars is to the show.

The Holiday episode "Miracle Near 34th Street" is one of the darkest Christmas episodes I ever have seen. The staff once again has to scramble for an explanation when The Mayor tells a little boy that Santa Claus is fake. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as Mike, Carter and Paul ends up on a roof trying to convince the boy that Santa Claus is real.

The "The Paul Lassiter Story" is one of my personal favorites, because it show how Spin City can handle a dramatic story. Mike contemplates his life as he awaits the results of a prostate cancer exam. This episode includes a brilliant bathroom scene between Mike and Paul, where Paul's disturbing curiosity leads him to find out about Mike's possible condition. When people say they were excited for Fox to return to television, after his Parkinson announcement, this is exactly what they were waiting for.

When the pope visits City hall in "The Pope of Gracie Mansion" the Mayor and Mike each begin to question the way they lead their lives.Carter fixes Nikki up with a friend of his and Paul's turtle is loose in City Hall. This is also the episode where Mike is in the confession room with a “special” priest.

The 4th season premiere "Catcher in the Bronx" featured the arrival of Heather Locklear as campaign manager Caitlin Moore. Her debut appearance was pretty funny, as she delicately tricked her way into the campaign manager position. There are also guest appearances from James Carville and Roger Clemens.

In the episode "A Tale of Two Sisters" the awkward love/hate relationship between Caitlin and Mike is showcased. Caitlin is extremely jealous, although she denies it, when Mike begins dating her sister. Christine Taylor guests appearances as Caitlin's sister.

"Casino" is the last episode on the first Spin City dvd. The Big buddy program is cut from the budget, and “Mikes idea” of starting a raffle end screwed up with multiple winners. Mike must come up with $500,000 and quick. In a hilarious spoof of Rain Man, he takes Paul to Atlantic City to count cards. There is even a re-enactment of the famous escalator scene from that movie.

I personally recommend this dvd to everyone, and if you are a Spin City fan this is a must have. So buy the dvd sit back and enjoy Michael J. Fox's personally picked all-time favorite episodes of his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning run on the smash-hit series Spin City.
