However, AIDS Activist Carter Heywood catches Mike's eye while giving a press conference. Mike then proceeds to hire Carter in order to put out the publicity fires.

Storyline #2: "We live together"

Review: Pilot
In this the first episode, we get a quick glimpse at the fast paced style of the deputy mayor Mike's daily tasks and get to meet the rest of the cast. Mike must deal with a crisis when the Mayor inadvertently insults the gay community.
Legendary TV director Thomas Schlamme directed this episode and it shows. The long tracking shots as two characters walk through hallways has become a Schlamme trademark. The constant trips through the "halls" symbolized the constant, hurried pace of politics. This was a great introduction to the series, balancing the political and personal relationships of the characters very well.

Did you notice ...
There was no intro sound during the opening (Which there were in the rest of the first season)?
Mike has a dog named Rex, who is never mentioned again?
Stuart has made a manifesto about why he should be Deputy Mayor(in his guest-starring role in "Mad About You: The Glue People (#4.17)" (1996), his character said he wants to be mayor of New York)
The Mayor seems to be Jewish.
